Hacienda San Miguel

The exploitation of its old mines, now abandoned and also an important tourist attraction, had its greatest boom at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century.

Such is the case of what today are the remains of a huge red brick construction that was once the estate owned by the American Alexander Robert Shepherd, who was called "The Silver Magnate" due to the enormous fortune that he is said to have earned as the owner of the most productive mines in Batopilas.

Shepherd was governor of the District of Columbia in the United States and was fascinated, so in 1880 he brought his family on muleback, bringing pianos, fine tableware, porcelain bathtubs and everything necessary to furnish his estate, where he lived happily and comfortably for more than 30 years.
