Copper Canyon

The Copper Canyons, located deep in the Sierra Madre Occidental in the state of Chihuahua, are a group of 20 canyons that display a magnitude 4 times greater than that of the Grand Canyon of Arizona. This immense series of canyons and ridges covers an area of 60,000 km2, although it is different in nature: narrower, deeper and with abundant vegetation, home of the Tarahumara or Rarámuri race, the Sierra Madre is rich in history, legends, traditions and culture, an area evangelized by the Spanish in the 17th century.

Undoubtedly, this set of ravines qualifies to be considered a national park and ecological reserve as well as a world heritage site. Over the years, the rivers that originate in the high forests have sculpted a 16,000 km labyrinth of spectacular volcanic rock gorges.

The flora, fauna and climate in the ravines are very varied and extreme. At the top of the mountains the vegetation is made up of conifers, pines, oaks, tascaste, holly oaks, strawberry trees and is home to coyotes, deer, eagles, woodpeckers and other species. At the bottom of the colossal canyons you will find tropical and subtropical vegetation such as bananas, papayas, citrus, cacti and mangoes, and birds such as parakeets and macaws, among other species.
