The Chihuahuan Desert Museum (MUDECH) is a new space whose theme specifically addresses this eco-geographic region of the state of Chihuahua. Through its four permanent exhibition halls and a room for temporary exhibitions, the history of the Chihuahuan Desert and the inhabitants of this region since the Ice Age are shown.
Room 1 presents the theme The Modern Desert, where visitors can learn what the desert is and who lives there. It offers information about flora, fauna and human society. Although the concept of desert is often associated with the absence of water, this exhibition shows how this element exists in the most arid regions and has allowed for various manifestations of life and development.
Room 2 deals with the regional history from the Ice Age to the Pleistocene Period; the arrival of man in America; the use of stone tools; the coexistence of humans with the extinction of the megafauna: mammoths, gomphotheres, sabre-toothed tigers and glyptodonts, among others. In a historical parenthesis or information island, the evolution of hominids is discussed. Near the end of this room, the history of American horses is presented, quadrupeds that already existed in American territory since the Pleistocene, long before the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors.
Room 3 is dedicated to the great inhabitants of the Cretaceous Period, of which there is abundant paleontological evidence in Chihuahua territory. Here the biogeographic region is larger and covers a large part of present-day North America. One of the distinctive characteristics of MUDECH are the scientific replicas, molded from original fossils, never before exhibited in Mexico. These pieces are made to a natural scale, which will be very popular with those interested in dinosaurs.
In Room 4 , the dinosaur theme continues with two Stegosaurus and two Dilophosaurs, animal species from the Jurassic Period. Here, visitors can discover the evolution of dinosaurs into birds.
Each room features ambient music originally created for the Museum.
